My take on palette knife painting.

Not something I do often but enjoy for a change of pace.

We have company and I can't paint. I can fit in a little sketching just to keep me from getting irritable. This is on a scrap piece of mat board using a china marker for the white.

Three Roses 2

This was done from a photo taken at the rose garden. I am trying to keep up with the 30 paintings in 30 days  challenge and I have company coming. I have a few painted ahead.

Sunlight Through the Trees

This was the demo I did for the painting class yesterday. We had a nice turnout and a lot of fun.

Horse Trotting

Another horse trotting. This is actually done from a different reference photo. I moved the horse to the bottom.

The reference for this one is Google earth. The images are copyright free. I think being there gives you a better perspective, maybe someday.

Snow in the Evergreens

Yesterday was a spring painting, now back to reality. I must admit I photographed this because I am not tough enough to paint plein air in the snow.

The cold weather has me yearning for spring. I pulled up this photo that I took last spring. I just wish I could be plein air painting here now.

Hannah Loves to Run

This is my happy carefree granddaughter at her best. She was originally running on a track field. I just like the green background the best.

Heading Back

All I had was a square format and wanted to paint a horse. Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days is really challenging me. When time was tight for me to get a painting in I went with what I am most familiar with.

Onions Ready for Planting

This is the third and last painting of those onions. I bought new yellow ones yesterday. Although these have really taken off, I wish I could plant them now.

Spring Lamb no6

I came back to this painting 3 days later and decided to make some changes. I couldn't find my reference photo so I winged it. It was relaxing to just play with the composition and colors.

Three Pink Roses

These roses are from the Bentonsport rose garden. I painted plein air and then took several photos. Roses are difficult for me and this one took a few trys.

This is the start of the roses, a mixture of mostly ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. I wiped out the shapes.

Red Onions on a White Plate

Another painting of the onions from a different angle. This one was painted on the white of the canvas alla prima.

When photographing cattle they seem to always look at you.

Marching French Horn

This was another challenge for me. Paintings of shiny instruments have always impressed me and after this on I plan to do more of them. There were several other band members on the other side of this musician but I chose to edit them out to make this less complicated for me.

Yellow Rose from Bentonsport

I experimented with my approach on this one. I started with just burnt sienna mixed with Liquin. I painted the other colors into this still wet mix.

Pretty Profile

I loved this profile. I hope I did her justice. Working the face in shadow is something I struggle with, adding greens and blues without loosing the freshness of the skin tones. For the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge I promised myself on days I have the time I would challenge myself with tough subjects.

I started on a ground of burnt sienna. This was painted in quick and loose working mostly whites and a mixture of alizarin leaving the darks showing through.

Onions Ready for Spring

I did these onions in three different paintings. I needed the practice which is always ongoing. This one started with a blue ground mixed with liquin. I painted into this with some wiping away for the highlights. 

I originally bought these red onions to paint them but as you can see that was a while back. Now they won't work for cooking but they still make a great painting subject.

Six Raspberries

I emailed this painting to a friend to get her opinion of it. She said it was a nice watercolor. Only it is an oil painting. She is not a painter but does admire art.

Garden Path

I painted this scene plein air during the local garden tour. This was painted in the studio using the plein air painting and a photo.

Jonathan Under the Light

Playing with another composition that intrigued me, simple and symmetric. Also the rule of never putting your horizon line through the center.

One Pear Outside

I resisted the urge to paint this composition but finally caved. I am not sure if it works to cut the image in half. I just liked it. 

This is in process where I wiped off the pear on the left once to move it up a little. Sometimes I like the half finished look for the fresh strokes. I especially like the pears on the right.
