Winter Sunset in the Cornfield

I went plein air painting with Jessica. So wanting to paint plein air after several winter scenes from photos. My painting did not go so well so I wiped it off and painted this from a photo I had.

This is or was the plein air painting. The river was frozen with a few spots of open water. Beautiful scene, but tough for me. I did get some practice with greys.

Snow Fall at Wilson Lake

Waiting to get out in the snow and paint the shadows. The weather was tolerable but the sun was not out. Back to the photos it is. Around sunset the sun did come out just long enough to get photos. This is another painting using the same colors as the last two.

Snow Melt

I painted this using the same paint colors as the last post, Pthalo blue, Ultramarine, burnt sienna, cad yellow, yellow ochre and quinocridone rose.

Snow in Sunlight and Shadow

This was first wiped off. I failed to capture the feeling of sunlight and tried again. I am just not ready to give it up. We had snow this weekend but no sunshine. This was from a photo of Wilson Lake a couple of years ago.

Herefords at the Grey Barn

I did something like this is a smaller format 12" x 6". This is not much larger, but I believe in baby steps. I switched the cattle to Herefords because I liked the contrast of the reddish fur against the blue. I did add one mixed breed, not sure if that was a good idea. This is oil and I can wipe that off and make another Hereford.

Winter Cattle Study

I want to paint larger but need to work out the composition. This is the gray barn I painted earlier. I added the cattle from another photo reference. I have photos of Herefords that I may use to try to add some nice warm colors against the cool.

Winter at the Gray Barn

We didn't have a lot of snow so this came from a photo I took last year. This challenge was to paint the gray and make it interesting. I did not use any black and mixed my grays, another challenge.

Sunset on the Cattle Pasture

This is a larger version of a previous study. This was painted on a orange pink ground. The study was on painted on a pink ground.

I am thinking that maybe it needs to be cropped.

Lone Tree in Winter 2014

I have painted this year several times through the years. I love the way the branches spread out. It is located in Rodeo Park and during winter they close the gates and you will have to walk to it but it is worth the view.

Snow in the Pasture One Cow

My artist friend Gin Lammert had an exhibit at the Fort Madison Art Center and as part of the opening reception she asked her fellow artists to paint. We had six artists painting and a nice crowd watching; all having a good time. My friend Carroll squeezed out some new paint colors for me to try, see the lovely blue next to the cow's head. I think that color was Caribbean Blue.

Snow in the Evergreens

Yesterday was a spring painting, now back to reality. I must admit I photographed this because I am not tough enough to paint plein air in the snow.

Snow Frolic in Rodeo Park

This was from a photo I took last year. The dog in the painting has passed away. He was the best dog we ever had and he came from the animal shelter. We still miss him.
