Sketching in the Park

Just a quick sketch. I was sitting with a friend at Art in the Park. This lady was holding the pose for quite a while but someone eventually pulled up a chair and sat it between her and me.  

Portrait sketches

Sketching seems to help me break out of a slump when I start painting too tight and don't see the whole picture. This was painted from a photo taken a long time ago. I used a variety of charcoal and graphic pencils for this one.

This might seem familiar as it is the same as a previous post. I had promised the sitter a sketch for signing the model release. I used the standard no 2 pencil for this one.

Brahma Bulls and other sketches

The rodeo is in town this weekend. This is from a photo I took last time they were in town. I was up on the fence when I took this and they were laying down.

I bought a bamboo dip pen and walnut ink. I once borrowed someone's bamboo dip pen and just loved it. I have since tried to find one with the same feel but no luck. This was tricky but you can get a variety of widths in your line.

This is from a photo of my daughter when she was 18.

Getting Ready to Show

This is a recent sketch done in pen and ink wash. When I sketch I don't draw a rough draft in pencil. You will see several lines on the outside. I am just warming up for painting and these are just practice. Just fast and loose, and this one is fairly accurate for anatomy. They are not always sucessful and usually I will just quit in the middle and move to another one if it is really off.

Green Apples and Blue Bottle

I ate all the red apples so the green had to do for this setup.

This was more for the practic matching the circle shapes in the vase. I may have to keep at it. I think I should have started out drawing all the round shapes in the vase first on my rough sketch rather than the shape of the vase.
