Sunset Over the Des Moines River

This is a small studio painting from a plein air study. We  were painting when a storm came up. I moved under a shelter house and painted on.

Bentonsport Rose

The rose garden at Bentonsport still had some nice blooms. I started this one on an orange ground hoping to capture the peachy rose, but I ended up with a pink rose. I need to work on that.

Plein Air Painting with the Zorn Palette

Carroll and I had a painting class scheduled at the local art center. Four of the participants had to cancel, so the rest of us decided to go plein air painting at the local park. Blick Art Materials is having a contest using the Zorn palette and this is my entry.

Pumpkin Patch at Appleberry Orchard

Nearby is an apple orchard/pumpkin patch called Appleberry Orchard. This is the perfect time of year for painting there. Great landscapes and lots of pumpkins still left in the field.

Albino

Experimenting with acrylic and just dropping in bold colors. White is a good color to play with colors in shadow.

Blue Roan Horse

Still have acrylic paints to use up. The blue I have is pthalo and it shows in this painting. I decided to try to work with this color more after I saw it used so well by a plein air painter.

White Horse

This is one of many horses at the parade. This was a very calm well mannered horse and looking alert. I enjoy painting white because of the opportunity to use any color I want in the shadows.

Orange Peeled

I went plein air painting without success. This was painted late at night to try to make the 30 paintings in 30 days deadline. I did miss yesterday.

Sunrise Over the Park

Sold
This was the sunset I tried to capture a couple of weeks ago. This was created from photos that don't do it justice. The two plein air paintings of this are the posts on August 19th and 21st.

This painting was accepted into the annual Exhibit of the American Academy of Equine Art.

Black Crow

This is sample I did for a painting class with younger students. My intention with this is that the male students would enjoy painting this and to encourage them to experiment with color especially with black . I also used acrylic.

Clouds over the Mississippi

I only had time to paint the clouds and left out the bridge. I took photos with the intention of putting it in later.

I am planning a painting from the photos I took of the parade. These are my practice sketches. I am not that confident on my ability to paint profiles and I have a lot of reference profiles from the parade to practice on.

Starr's Cave Nature Center - Day 8

Yesterday we went to Starr's Cave to paint. There were some wonderful sites along the creek bed that required us to haul our stuff. I took photos instead and chose this view close to the parking lot. Some children came by and complimented me on my "bear" on the top, only it was supposed to be a cow. I stayed a little longer and fixed that, then asked my husband what it was: "a cow".  Now I am finished.

Parade Sketches - plein air day 7

Yesterday I watched the Rodeo parade and took pictures. This was a great opportunity to sketch the spectators. The above sketch was from across the road and I did have to draw fast before they changed position. You do not have time to erase.

The parade was stopped and I had time to sketch this majorette.

Plein Air painting in Wilson Lake 1st painting

All of my plein air paintings yesterday were waterscapes. This was painted around 2pm and there was not a lot of shadows. The shadow under the far trees was what attracted me to this scene. They seemed to have a blueish cast.

Wilson Lake Plein Air

I am participating in Leslie Saeta's 30 paintings in 30 days. I decided to do 30 Plein air paintings in 30 days. I started with paintings I did at a plein air competition.
Today I did three to get ahead. This one was especially challenging for me. I wanted to paint the underwater log. I can't guarantee that I will do the tough ones since they may take longer.

Dangerous Combination

I had to drop some paintings off for an exhibit and on the way home I stopped to paint.  A friend joined me later outside Mount Pleasant. Oakland Mills was our first choice but we found a shady place on the banks of the Skunk River in Waterworks Park. This rope swing and hollow tree drew me in. The rope looked old and possibly ready to break should anyone try to use it, not to mention it is hanging from a hollow tree.

Amana Skies

The last day of plein air painting in the Amanas the skies were so beautiful. This was a quick painting trying to capture the ever changing sky.

Plein air Amana

This was the painting I did on the overcast day. Usually I avoid overcast days but I wanted as many paintings to choose from as I can. I painted without stopping for lunch that day.
