Sunset on the Trail

Practicing on clouds again. Sunsets are the most fleeting. My artist friend Gin Lammert has an upcoming show with lots of inspiring sunsets or maybe they are sunrises?

Road to Augusta

Another challenging landscape. Usually a road that snakes through the landscape makes a more interesting subject and successful painting, but I have seen artists take an ordinary scene and make it work.  This was my challenge with this scene. Also still practicing my clouds.

Forest Scene

Pulled up another photo from my warm weather plein air painting. Clouds are fleeting so it is better for me to practice from the photos. I hope I can keep the scene in my head long enough to paint a believable cloudscape plein air.

Tall Trees

Beautiful clouds today. I could not decide between the clouds or these trees. When I first saw this the sunlight was hitting the tree trunks, but like on any cloudy day the sunlight came and went leaving me to my memory. The clouds added more interest to the background like the blues starting as a mass above then breaking up into particles dropping down. This weekend I saw the movie "Pixels" and that is probably why it seems that way.

Hay Field under the Midwestern Skies

Hopefully this is the final edit.

I used a sky scene from one photo reference and a edited landscape from another for this. If it looks familar that is because it is based on the sample I created for an Arty Party.

Clouds over the Mississippi

I only had time to paint the clouds and left out the bridge. I took photos with the intention of putting it in later.

I am planning a painting from the photos I took of the parade. These are my practice sketches. I am not that confident on my ability to paint profiles and I have a lot of reference profiles from the parade to practice on.

Sky Study

Jessica and I went down to the river bank to paint, mostly clouds. The camera does not capture the subtle shades and colors. Painting on site hones your skill as the clouds do not stay the same for very long and after about an hour and a half the sky cleared up.

Clouds no2

I am working on clouds for a larger painting. This is the second study for the sky. When plein air painting you will not always get the perfect sky and even when I do the clouds move too fast for my skills. I will paint the sky to record atmospheric conditions and also take pictures.
